Summerfield is an unincorporated community in south Marion County, near the intersection of US 301 and CR 475A, with Belleview to the north and The Villages to the south.
Its history runs deep. The settlement was once called Watula, or Long Hammock, then Whitesville in 1873. In 1888 it was renamed Summerfield for Col. Adam G. Summer, a cattleman who came to Marion County in 1856 and imported Brahman cattle in 1860.
Early Summerfield had a sawmill, gristmill, cotton gin and shipping station, and settlers grew cotton, oranges and vegetables. A Summerfield post office has operated since 1885.
Today newer neighborhoods sit alongside older homesteads along the US 301 and US 441 corridor. Whether you’re moving in, moving closer to The Villages or leaving for anywhere in Florida, Old Florida Moving is ready.
