Brooksville is the county seat of Hernando County, a city of about 8,900 residents at the 2020 census. The town was established in 1856 and incorporated as a city in 1880.
Unlike most of Florida, the land here rolls. Elevations in the city run roughly 100 to 180 feet, and Chinsegut Hill, about five miles northeast, rises to 269 feet, one of the highest points in peninsular Florida. Its historic manor house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In town, the May-Stringer House holds the Hernando Heritage Museum, and the Good Neighbor Trail, about 10.7 miles long, connects to the Withlacoochee State Trail. Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport is about 6 miles south of the city.
