Suwannee is a small fishing village of about 250 people at the mouth of the Suwannee River, where Florida’s most famous river meets the Gulf of Mexico.
It’s surrounded by the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest undeveloped river deltas in the country, and the only way in is CR 349 south from Old Town.
Most homes are elevated stilt houses on canals, with boat docks instead of back yards. Many are seasonal, and after recent storms a lot of owners have been repairing, storing furniture and moving back in.
