Starke is the county seat of Bradford County, incorporated in 1870, with US 301 running right through the middle of town. The 1902 Old Bradford County Courthouse, now known as the Andrews Center, still anchors downtown.
Strawberries are a big part of life here. The Bradford County Strawberry Festival has celebrated the local crop every April since 1998, and Starke and nearby Lawtey have long been farming towns.
Camp Blanding, the Florida National Guard base, is about 8 miles east, and Gainesville is roughly 25 miles southwest. That mix brings in military families, state workers and commuters along with families who have been here for generations.
