Lake City is the county seat of Columbia County and sits right where I-75 and I-10 cross. Before it was incorporated in 1859, the settlement here was known as Alligator.
Downtown keeps plenty of history, from the Columbia County Courthouse to the 1902 Hotel Blanche, with Alligator Lake Park close by. Florida Gateway College, formerly Lake City Community College, offers both associate and bachelor’s degrees right in town.
Olustee Station, where the Battle of Olustee was fought in 1864, is about ten miles east, and Ichetucknee Springs State Park is just outside Fort White to the southwest. Gainesville is about 46 miles south and Jacksonville about 60 miles east.
